Growth in Communications
In the field of communications, the ability to think critically and maintain self-awareness in the workplace is crucial. As professionals navigating the complexities of the workplace environment, we constantly encounter challenges that require us to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and understand our own strengths and weaknesses. Trying out new techniques to enhance our critical thinking skills and grow our self-awareness becomes not just useful, but essential. In this week’s blog, we will touch on some great strategies that can help us thrive in our roles and excel in the field of communications!
First and foremost, let's consider the practice of mindfulness and reflection. By incorporating moments of mindfulness into our daily routines, we can grow a better understanding of our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Taking the time to reflect on our experiences allows us to gain a good understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. Next, let's talk about the importance of seeking out feedback from our peers. Constructive criticism can be hard to ask for or even listen to, but it offers great perspectives on our performance. Listening to feedback and constructive criticism with an open mind allows us to find areas for improvement.
In my own professional journey, I have experienced firsthand the great power of mindfulness and reflection. Incorporating these practices into my daily routine has been super helpful in helping me maintain clarity and focus in the many stresses of my workplace. I allow myself to take moments to pause, center myself, and reflect on my thoughts and actions. By doing this, I have gained great insights into my own decision-making process and have been better equipped to navigate complex challenges with confidence.
Also, listening to feedback has been an important part of my growth in the communications field. Constructive criticism from my peers has given me their great perspectives on my performance and areas for I can improvement. By actively seeking out feedback and approaching it with an open mind, I have been able to identify where I am lacking, better my skills, and rise to the occasion more effectively. I view each piece of feedback that I receive as an opportunity for me to continue learning and growing.
If you are looking for a guide through this topic, I suggest reading Allan T. Sternberg's "Critical Thinking Bible”. His insights have helped me learn to ‘get out of my own way’ in terms of self-sabotage. I believe Sternberg’s book is the reason I am able to identify when I am letting my emotions get the best of me in the workplace, and where I can better apply my critical thinking skills.  This comprehensive guide is a treasure trove of practical strategies and insights aimed at growing critical thinking abilities. Whether it's analyzing complex scenarios, reflecting on making sound judgments, Sternberg's book prepares communication professionals, like myself, with the tools they need to thrive in their workspaces.
